ABOUT

Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. was born 26 days after the assassination of his father, Chairman Fred Hampton, the Chairman of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party. These are family portraits.  

The grave rubbings were created the day of the installation of the Chairman Fred Hampton Grave Memorial in Haynesville, LA. The The rubbings were composed over the screen-printed canvases before the headstone was permanently enclosed. Click here for more info on the Memorial. 

 

The Estate of Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. granted permission for the use of the images and creation of this work. 

 

TOP: December 4, 1969 is a screen print of the mugshot of Akua Njeri (fka Deborah Johnson) taken on December 4th, 1969 by the Chicago Police, the night of Chairman Fred Hampton's assassination. She is 8 1/2 months pregnant with her first and only child with Chairman Fred. She is wearing his robe. 

​BOTTOM: I Never Saw Chairman Fred Hampton Again, is a screen print of a still from the 1971 documentary, The Murder of Fred Hampton. At this point of the film, she is recounting the night of the assassination. This image was reproduced with permission from the Chicago Film Archive.
